The vehicles of the MÁV series M44 were diesel locomotives of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) for mixed operation. The Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn (GySEV) also received machines of this type . At the same time it was delivered to the former Soviet Union under the designation ВМЭ1 , under the designation T 455.0 to the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD), as series 51 to the BDŽ and as series SM 40 to the PKP .
history
This locomotive was first delivered to MÁV in 1956 for light freight trains and medium-duty shunting services. The maximum permissible speed of 80 km / h made it suitable for mixed duty. Deliveries of this locomotive for heavy shunting in private companies are still recorded in 1960.
technical features
The locomotive is a construction with a driver's cab at one end of the vehicle section. It was powered by the tried and tested XVI 170/240 diesel engine of the Ganz -Jendrassik design. Somewhat unusual was that it was designed as a 16-cylinder engine with the cylinders arranged in a V-shape.
The electrical power transmission with the main generator (680 kW, 485 V and 1400 A) and the four traction motors designed as pent-bearing motors made it possible to control up to three locomotives from one driver's cab. The locomotive had two driver's cabs arranged diagonally in the driver's cab.
The bogies and the suspension were redesigned, which was an improvement over a simple suspension with the help of coil springs. With regard to the shunting service, transitions for the shunting personnel were arranged on the front sides. The fuel tank was located under the frame between the bogies. The sand spreader was electro-pneumatic.

It was more commercial than technical reasons that five locomotives were purchased in 1957. Their small number was decisive for the fact that the machines were not given a great future when the locomotive fleet was rationalized. So they were retired until 1968.
ВМЭ1 series for the SZD
In the 1950s, the SZD wanted to switch increasingly from steam to diesel traction in the shunting service. Since the production of domestic diesel- electric shunting locomotives was only just beginning, locomotives from Hungary and Czechoslovakia were used for the first vehicles . A total of 310 locomotives of this series were delivered from 1958 to 1965.
The first diesel locomotives of the series ВМЭ1 received the railway junction in Leningrad for shunting work . It turned out that the locomotives were too weak for freight train service. Therefore, they were used to assemble passenger trains.
These locomotives also worked for many railway companies in the former USSR, such as in the Baltic States . They were used there for regional trains.
The locomotives turned out to be too weak in comparison with the ЧМЭ2 and the other machines of the TEM class. From 1975 to 1985 they were deleted from the inventory lists.
