Márton Szipál (born May 8, 1924 in Szolnok , † April 26, 2016 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian photographer and photo reporter . In the English-speaking world he was known as Martin Szipál , his stage name was Martin S. Martin .

Life

Szipál grew up in Debrecen and then settled in Budapest . After training as a photographer, he graduated as a master in 1942. During the Second World War he was a pilot and was taken prisoner of war . In 1946 he opened his first shop in Debrecen. In 1953 he joined the cooperative Budapest photographer (Budapesti Fényképész Szövetkezet) when, in 1954 was a founding member of Debrecen Photo Artists' Union (Debreceni Művészfényképészek Szövetsége) and 1956 of the Hungarian Photo Artists Association (Magyar Fotóművészek Szövetsége) .

In 1965 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles . He worked as a celebrity and fashion photographer and photographed actors such as John Wayne , Margaux Hemingway and Priscilla Presley .

In 1998 he returned to Hungary, worked as a photo reporter and taught photography.

Szipál has won a number of prizes in national and international competitions. His pictures have been exhibited in all major Hungarian cities. His works are in the Hungarian Museum of Photography (Magyar Fotográfiai Múzeum) in Kecskemét .

At the end of April 2016, he died of prostate cancer in Budapest, at the age of almost 92.
