The Mönchhof saw mill is a cultural, historical and technical monument of the Waldachtal community on the edge of the northern Black Forest in the Freudenstadt district . The mill is an original and fully functional sawmill in the northern Black Forest. It was first mentioned in 1435 as the property of the Bebenhausen monastery near Tübingen. Waldachtal-Cresbach is located in the
eastern Black Forest , roughly halfway between Horb and Freudenstadt . In Lützenhardt, two kilometers away, in Vesperweiler , is the historic sawmill with water power drive.

Mill operation and sawing equipment

history

Vesperweiler's old town center on the Waldach (called "Flecka") was founded by monks from the Bebenhausen monastery in 1088 as a farm. The watermill was built on the Waldach in the Waldachtal at an economically favorable location on the Waldach, probably also by the monks near or on the monastery yard. The Mönchhof sawmill was first mentioned in 1435 as the property of the Bebenhausen monastery near Tübingen. The fully functional drive of the saw dates from 1903. The sawmill is still fully functional and in operation today.

The mill owners are already running the sawmill in the third generation. Over the years you have created a monument that shows the traditional economy and way of life in the Black Forest. The technical monument, a sawmill as a unique system with water power and belt drive as in earlier centuries, has long been known through the media beyond the Waldachtal.

technology

The sawmill of the former Mönchhof, which has existed since at least 1435, is still functional today and, in addition to the museum, also performs contract cutting and carpentry work. It is operated with hydropower; the mill wheel has a diameter of 6 meters. The drive mechanism used today dates from 1903. With the complete renovation of the waterwheel (6, oo m) in 2005, the prerequisites were created to generate environmentally friendly electricity.

Museum and exhibition

The mill, originally owned by the Bebenhausen monastery, is now privately owned.

In the museum, the mill owners offer visits, guided tours, handicraft demonstrations and exhibitions. Old woodworking tools and agricultural machines complete the museum offer:

  • the mill is open every Saturday from 12 noon and a tour starts at 2 p.m.
  • Adventure tours of the mill take place 3 times a year - the program: "From tree seeds to the finished board".

The mill can be visited all day on the German Milling Day (DMT) and on the Open Monument Day . Further dates can be arranged with the operators.

In 2015, the nationwide official opening of the 22nd German Milling Day took place at the Mönchhofsäge.

The Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg named the complex Monument of the Month October 2016 .
