Munich Science Days
The Munich Science Days were a four-day major event that took place in Munich every year from 2001 to 2018 .
At the Munich Science Days, experts from research, companies and institutions were available to discuss the sometimes difficult facts of science and technology in a dialogue with the population and to discuss questions about actual and supposed opportunities and risks. Lectures, discussions, panel discussions, workshops, films, exhibitions, scientific market stalls, excursions, open days and guided tours were offered.
Participation in all events was free of charge.
The Munich Science Days were headed by Karl Daumer until 2008 and organized by the Association of German Biologists until 2007 . In 2008 the Munich Science Days e. V. founded its own sponsoring association. This included the representatives of important scientific institutions in the greater Munich area (all Munich universities, institutes of the Fraunhofer and Max Planck Society , DLR , Helmholtz Center and others). From 2008 to 2018 they were led by Frank Holl . The managing director was Steffi Bucher.
The program had a central venue. From 2012 to 2018 this was the old congress hall on Theresienhöhe with the traffic center of the Deutsches Museum opposite . Previously, the main venues were the Marienhof (2001), the Technical University of Munich (2002–2003), the Federal Garden Show 2005 and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (2004, 2006–2008, 2010, 2011). In 2009 the Munich Science Days took place decentrally at more than 50 locations in the greater Munich area.
Parallel to the program at the central event location, further events were offered at around 30 to 40 other locations in the greater Munich area.
The education channel ARD-alpha (formerly BR-alpha) recorded most of the lectures between 2011 and 2016 and broadcast them as the “Munich Science Days” series. Then they were shown in the BR media library. In 2017, the broadcaster stopped recording (with the exception of lectures on November 27, 2017). Since then, the organizer has recorded the lectures and themed evenings himself, streamed them on his Facebook page and then published them on his YouTube channel.
The Munich Science Days were a permanent fixture for 18 years, attracting around 25 to 30,000 interested visitors every year and encouraging them to participate, reflect and ask questions. Due to insufficient funding, the Münchner Wissenschaftstage eV decided. V. in March 2019 not to hold any further events.
