The Münsterplatz is a square in the center of Bonn . It is located northwest of Bonn Minster and can be reached from the main station via Poststraße. In addition to Friedensplatz and Bonn Marktplatz , it is one of the three largest squares in Bonn's pedestrian zone. Martinsplatz connects to the south of Münsterplatz. Münsterplatz is the venue for several festivals and events such as the Bonn Christmas market. There are many historical buildings on Münsterplatz, especially the former main post office . In front of this stands the famous Beethoven monument in Bonn . In addition, the Münsterplatz is the location of several department stores such as Galeria Kaufhof (built 1960–1964; new facade in 1979), TK Maxx and SinnLeffers .
The current name of the square can be traced back to 1719, before it was referred to as "Aufm Hof" or "Aufm Großes Hof" since the Middle Ages. In the spring of 1963, the construction of the underground car park under the Münsterplatz began and then until May 1967 the above-ground square was redesigned according to the revised plans by the Bonn architect Hans Spoelgen. A previously wooden “milk pavilion” on Münsterplatz that was used for catering purposes was replaced by a new building when the underground car park was built; the current pavilion was built after the old one was torn down in 2006.
