The M-84AS is a Serbian main battle tank that was unveiled to the public in 2004. The tank is a further development of the Yugoslav M-84 . The original name of the manufacturer Yugoimport SDPR was M-84AB1 , later the tank was renamed "M-2001". The current designation is "M-84AS".
development
The M-84AS is an upgrade of the Yugoslav battle tank M-84. It was developed together with Russia . The basis was the T-72M1M program, the Russian program for increasing the combat value of the T-72 series. It was, inter alia, a new fire control system, a new armor made of steel, titanium and aluminum , and a contact-5 - reactive armor fitted. It is also possible to fire anti-tank guided missiles 9K119 Refleks . The modern Agava-2 thermal imaging system and the Schtora active guided missile defense system are also installed as innovations.
The M-84AS is almost identical to the Russian T-90 S main battle tank . It is faster and easier to maneuver, while the T-90S is better armored. In June 2020 the modernized version M-84AS1 was presented. In addition to better reactive armor , an all- round thermal imaging camera and a remote-controlled weapon station with a 12.7 mm machine gun were installed.
