m -Cresolphthalein is a triphenylmethane dye and belongs to the phthaleine family. The name is composed of m -cresol and phthalic anhydride . The corresponding sulfonphthalein is cresol purple . Like phenolphthalein, it is used asa pH indicator . At a pH of 9.76, the color changes from colorless to purple-red.
