Murugappa Channaveerappa Modi (* 1915 in Bijapur , Karnataka , India ; † November 11, 2005 in Bangalore ) was an Indian ophthalmologist and pioneer in the operation of cataracts .

Life

Modi performed 833 cataract surgeries in one day, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of Records in 1988 . There was no detailed evidence, however, there was an article in this regard in the PR News in 1946 by Edward Bernays , a nephew of Sigmund Freud, with the statement "... was the first doctor ever to apply my science - the social science of public opinion - to the choosing and development of a surgical specialty. My surveys, opinions, and focus groups identified a previously ignored market - mass eye surgery - where there were throngs of potential consumers, just there for the picking ... " . In 1966 a newspaper article reported "doing a Modi", which means such an operation.

From 1943 to 1993 he performed 610,564 eye operations, for which he received the prestigious Padma Bhushan , the third highest Indian state award, from the Indian government . He is said to have visited 46,120 villages and treated 12,118,630 patients in his life. In 1980 he also founded the Dr. MC Modi Road in Bangalore the Dr. MC Modi Charitable Eye Hospital , a hospital that provides free eye surgery for the lower social classes. He has also received the Watumull Award for Community Service and the Humanitarian Award , honored by Lions International USA. There is also an MC Modi High School in Devgadh Baria , Gujarat .
