MG Finn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MG Finn (born October 23, 1958 in Atlantic City , New Jersey ) is an American chemist and professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology .

Life

Finn studied chemistry at Caltech on an Eastman Kodak scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in 1980 . He then had a short research stay at Eastman Kodak before joining the group of the later Nobel Prize winner Barry Sharpless at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1986, he was at Sharpless with the work "On the mechanism of titanium-catalyzed asymmetric epoxidation tartrate" doctorate . As a postdoc he worked with a grant from the National Institutes of Health at James P. Collman at Stanford University . He was at the Scripps Research Institute and moved to Georgia Tech in 2013, where he is now (as of 2013) Director of the Chemical Biology Center .

Finn works on developing synthetic methods for biologically important molecules, including functionally virus- like particles. With Barry Sharpless and Hartmuth C. Kolb he coined the term click chemistry ( Click Chemistry ). Further work deals with the mechanisms and optimization of the copper-catalyzed azide - alkyl - cycloaddition , with the targeted synthesis of enzyme inhibitors and antivirals , with bio- conjugation and chemical material science , with the immunology of carbohydrates and with new methods of enzyme development .

His laboratory experiments a lot with viruses as building blocks for the targeted development of biologically active substances.

In 2012 he received the Humboldt Research Award . He is the editor of ACS Combinatorial Science . In 2013 he was one of the Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates .
