Lists on the subject

The MAC-50 (also known as the MAS-50 ) was the standard pistol of the French armed forces for many years . It was made by the state arsenals in Châtellerault and Saint-Étienne .

History and use

After the Second World War, the French military decided to have a new service pistol designed. The previous handguns from local production had proven to be inefficient, which is why a 9 mm caliber was introduced. The model 1935A self-loading pistol was chosen as the basis, the breech of which was oversized for the previous cartridge, but offered sufficient safety reserves for the 9 mm Parabellum.

The pistol was part of the army's equipment from 1950 and was replaced in 1987 by the Beretta 92 , which is manufactured under license in France as PA MAS G1 . Last used by the National Gendarmerie , it was replaced there by the SIG SP 2022 .

Depending on the manufacturing facility, the pistol was named MAC-50 (for Châtellerault) or MAS-50 (for Saint-Étienne). MAC built 221,900 units by June 1963, then MAS took over production and built another 120,000 MAS-50s by April 1978. The stamped serial numbers of the weapons were prefixed by the letters “A” to “W” at MAC, “FG” and “FH” at MAS.

properties

The MAC / MAS model 1950 fires the standard NATO cartridge 9 × 19 mm . The rifle has a locking system based on the Browning system with a tilting barrel and two locking combs on the top of the barrel and a direct trigger . The structure of the MAC-50 is similar to the Colt M1911 and is accordingly robust. The safety lever only fixes the firing pin , there is no release lever. The magazine is single-row and holds nine cartridges.
