history

The German eightfight is the modern form of mixed gymnastics competitions . These mixed competitions with athletic and gymnastics disciplines have been held at German gymnastics festivals since 1880 . For some time this all-around competition was of international importance. At the 2nd Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, in addition to 6 equipment exercises and hanging, long, high, pole vaults and stone lifting had to be completed. After that, however, these so-called athletic exercises were only required in 1904 in St. Louis and at the interludes in 1906 in Athens. Then the gymnastics Olympic champions were only determined with pure apparatus competitions . At the 1st World Championships in Antwerp in 1903, in addition to 12 equipment exercises and 6 compulsory calisthenics, the competition program also included a 150 m run, high jump and weightlifting. These athletic exercises were required in different compositions up to the 1950 World Championships in Basel. At the 1954 World Championships in Rome, there were pure equipment competitions for the first time. The composition of the competition disciplines was subject to constant change. Over time, the number and weighting of track and field to gymnastics disciplines changed several times, so that at various gymnastics festivals a six-fight, eight-fight, decathlon and a twelve-fight were held. Some of the athletic disciplines were only announced a few weeks before the gymnastics festivals. In its current form (4: 4), the German eight fight has been held in Munich since the German Gymnastics Festival in 1998 .

The history of the mixed gymnastics competitions for women is similarly eventful. First held in 1922 as a nine-way fight (7: 2), the composition changed several times. In its current form (4: 4), the German eight fight for women has been carried out since 1970.
