The gymnastics and sports association Sachsenhausen 1857 is an old legal association from the Frankfurt district of Sachsenhausen and emerges from the merger of the gymnastics club Sachsenhausen 1857 and the gymnastics society Sachsenhausen 1873 in 1946. Both clubs are among the six founders of the Turngau Frankfurt on June 2, 1875.

The former gymnastics club Sachsenhausen gained fame in 1857 by winning the German championship in men's field hockey in 1939 and 1943. After the Second World War, the Frankfurt theater played from 1946 to 1951 in what is now the club hall on Walter-Kolb-Strasse.

history

The Gymnastics Club Sachsenhausen (TVS) was officially founded in 1857 after it had already existed unofficially for a year. The Gymnastics Society Sachsenhausen (TGS) was founded on June 23, 1873. Both clubs cultivated friendly relationships and jointly organized an annual forest festival. When on June 2, 1875 the Gau Frankfurt a. M. (today Turngau Frankfurt ), both clubs were founding members and also provided representatives for the new board.

The development of both clubs went well and they decided to purchase land for the construction of gyms. However, they lacked the legal capacity to do so. In the years 1892 and 1893, Kaiser Wilhelm II granted the TVS and TGS associations the rights of a legal person through “the highest cabinet rights” . The term registered association (e.V.) was only introduced by the Civil Code from January 1, 1900.

In 1857, at the turn of the century, new types of competition prompted the TVS to lease a sports field for athletics on the Last Hasenpfad . The club hall of the TGS 1873 in Veitstraße (today Walter-Kolb-Straße) was inaugurated on September 11, 1892, the gym of the TVS 1857 in Offenbacher Landstraße on July 26, 1896. Both were used as military hospitals during the First World War . In 1924 Arthur von Weinberg made it possible for the TGS to build their own sports field on Mörfelder Landstrasse in 1873.

Playhouse in the gym

The gym in Offenbacher Landstrasse, now a hospital, was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main during the Second World War , as was the opera house and the theater. The club hall in today's Walter-Kolb-Straße was the only room that allowed theater plays at that time. From June 15, 1946 to December 30, 1951, it was used as a venue for the Frankfurt theater , which is remembered by the plaque in the entrance area of the club hall. During this time, the gymnasts avoided the small gym of the Freiherr vom Stein School .

Merger and present

On July 6, 1946, united gymnastics club Sachsenhausen in 1857 and Turngesellschaft Sachsenhausen 1,873 1,857 jur for Gymnastics and Sports Association Sachsenhausen. Person. It is an old law association with the status of a legal person and is not entered in the register of associations .

For the 100th anniversary in 1957, the sports field on Darmstädter / Babenhäuser Landstrasse was built by the city of Frankfurt, where hockey players still play their field games today. The theater stage in the club hall was only removed in 1968, and the building was gradually restored in the following years.

In 1986 the association had 1039 members, the peak it reached in 1993 with 1231 members. Extensive renovation work on the club hall in the following years affected its use and many members left the club. After the completion, the number of members increased slowly from year to year. A new high of 1236 members was reached at the end of 2004.

TSV Sachsenhausen celebrated its 150th anniversary with a ceremony in 2007 and the hockey department its 90th anniversary in 2009.

In the course of the growing need for year-round practice rooms, renovation work was carried out on the club hall and in the front building and completed in 2018. Office space, changing rooms, showers and two other exercise rooms were created, which enable smaller groups to train at the same time.

As of April 2018, the association with its gymnastics, hockey, table tennis and volleyball departments had 1,800 members.
