The Standard - articulated of MAN SG 240 H or SG 280H is 1980 as a successor to the MAN SG 220 come to market.
After the articulated pusher bus Mercedes-Benz O 305 G came onto the market in 1978 and the patent rights for the articulation angle control of the joint developed by the vehicle workshops in Falkenried (FFG) were also held by Daimler-Benz , MAN responded by designing an articulated bus with a rear engine Central axis was driven by a homokinetic joint . By placing the diesel engine in the rear, the front end of the VÖV standard bus MAN SL 200 with its lower floor could be used. This made it the first MAN articulated bus that was built entirely under the responsibility of MAN. However, it was manufactured by the body manufacturer Göppel in Augsburg . Just like the MAN SG 220 , it was available with both the city bus front with front double doors and the narrow StÜLB door. It was also available as an overland articulated bus with a length of 16.5 m and 18 m.
With just under 400 units produced, the SG 240 H was not as important as the Mercedes-Benz O 305 G , which was produced in considerably larger numbers. Compared to the standard articulated bus from Magirus-Deutz , the 260 SH 170 , also published in 1980 , of which only 39 were built, the MAN model was, however, quite successful. The largest amount was sold between 1980 and 1986 to Stadtwerke Augsburg with 65 vehicles, so far there have not been nearly as many buses of any other type of vehicle.
In the mid-1980s it was replaced by the second-generation MAN SG 242 H standard articulated bus and production was discontinued in 1986.
Duo bus
In 1983 a duo bus based on the type discussed here was also created for Essener Verkehrs-AG ; this was also adapted for track bus operation. Its designation was SG 240 H Duo, the company number was 3700. In 1986, this prototype was removed from its electrical equipment , it came from Kiepe , then it was used as a pure diesel bus until it was retired in 1991.
