The MEETin group is a web- based, social community with the aim of organizing small local events. No monthly fees are charged, and no profit is sought at the events. Since it was founded in the USA in 2003, the organization has expanded to over 90 cities worldwide. It currently has 75,000 members, including four cities in German-speaking countries. Over 30,000 events have been planned so far.

history

MEETin was founded in March 2003 by Mikey Heard in Washington DC to meet other people in the anonymity of the big city. As the group became more active within Washington, it spread to 16 other cities in the United States, some of which it is still active in today.

Infrastructure

Although MEETin started out as a Yahoo Group , Heard soon created its own website to cope with the growing membership and cities. This website is the basis of the MEETin Group today and is still used as the original infrastructure.

MEETin events

MEETin events are mostly smaller events organized by the members. Meetings in bars and restaurants are widespread , but so is attending events such as concerts, sporting events, local festivals, museums and cinemas. The spectrum also includes excursions and sporting activities, private parties or game evenings at home with the members. In general, every MEETin member is welcome at every event. “Business networking”, single and dating events, on the other hand, are not permitted. A member who organizes an event is also not allowed to benefit financially from it.

MEETin in German-speaking countries

Since MEETinGENEVA was founded in Geneva on June 26, 2004 , MEETin has also been available in German-speaking countries. Since then, the cities of Düsseldorf , Bonn , Hamburg and Munich have been added, with MEETinDUESSELDORF currently having the most members and events.

A special feature of the MEETin cities in non-English speaking countries is the very high proportion of members who do not speak the respective national language or only speak it poorly. Therefore, English is often the official language in these cities , or at least all texts are translated into English. The groups in these cities are therefore significantly more international than in America's cities.
