The MIK Museum Information Kunst in Ludwigsburg is an urban culture and information center. In its rooms it houses the Ludwigsburg Museum , the Ludwigsburg district art association , the city's tourist information center and a café.

history

The house was built in 1731 as an administrative building and fruit box by the church council. It later served as a bailiwick , then as the residence of the district president. The post office and the customs office used its premises from 1855 to 1887. From 1890 it housed the Oberamt and until 1957 the District Office .

Conversion to a culture and information center

According to plans by the architects Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei , the building was converted over a seven-year planning and construction period and expanded with a modern extension. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on November 22, 2011. The building has 2,300 m² of usable space and 1,270 m² of public spaces. The costs were around 8.3 million euros with a funding budget of 5.5 million euros.

The opening ceremony took place on May 12, International Museum Day. At the opening, the Kunstverein presented the first exhibition by the Chinese artist Liu Bolin in Germany. In his photo series Hiding in the City , the artist adapts his own figure to the background so that his body and the background merge. At the opening, the Ludwigsburg Museum presented a photographic documentation by Rainer Walder on the history of the renovation in its exhibition room in the basement.

Entrance to the inner courtyard in Eberhardstrasse

The outer facade is painted white, in contrast to the other baroque buildings in downtown Ludwigsburg, whose facades are mostly pastel yellow. The inner walls are also white. A bright white paint on the newly placed walls contrasts with the gray-white, irregular plaster of the old interior walls. The floors are made of polished black asphalt. The entrance area is dominated by a high atrium encompassing all floors.

Exhibits on the walls of this entrance hall point to key themes in the history of Ludwigsburg. There is a gallery on the first floor and the Ludwigsburg Museum to the side. In the basement there is an elongated vaulted cellar with a baroque vault shape. It was equipped with a modern ventilation system and is used by the art association as an exhibition room. A second room in the basement is used by the museum. Its white ceiling is shaped like a wave; the waves get higher and higher from one end to the other like surf waves on a beach.
