The mRNA capping enzyme (CE) is one of two enzymes in eukaryotes that provide the mRNA with a protective group of molecules, the so-called 5'-cap structure , during transcription . The CE in particular attaches a guanylyl residue to the mRNA, which is later methylated. This requires two reaction steps, which are catalyzed by two different protein domains on the CE enzyme. So it is a bifunctional enzyme. Four CE isoforms are known in humans , which occur in different tissue types and have partly lost their enzymatic activity.

CE is part of the so-called capping complex , which arises after dissociation of the pre-initiation complex after its separation from the promoter and contains among other things the RNA polymerase II and the two capping enzymes.
