The MaK 240 B and MaK 240 C are two types of wheel set-less diesel locomotives that the MaK company built for private and industrial railways in the 1950s and 1960s . The two types, which are identical apart from the chassis, are the smallest types of the so-called MaK rod locomotives .

The type 240 B has two, whereas the 240 C has three drive wheel sets . The use of a third drive wheel set on the 240 C served to reduce the wheel set load from a minimum of 14 t to a minimum of 10 t and at the same time to increase the tractive force. Both types were offered in the first MaK type program from 1954. The first 240 B left the factory in the same year, the first 240 C followed a year later.

The locomotives are built on a frame welded from rolled sections and sheet steel. The engine and cooling system are located under the long front end, the gearbox under the driver's cab, and the fuel tank and various auxiliary units under the shorter front end. A device for train heating was not available; the machines were not intended for use in front of passenger trains, but primarily on works railways.

Both versions are driven by a MaK six-cylinder MS 24 engine with 240 hp (177 kW) at 1,000 rpm, a significantly higher rated speed than the slow-running diesel engines with a maximum of 750 rpm installed in the other MaK rod locomotives. As with the other series in the modular system, the power is transmitted from the engine via a diesel-hydraulic transmission (here: Voith Type L 33 yUb). The drive of the driving axles is also carried out as in the larger series of Stangenlokbauprogramms from the blind shaft running output shaft of the hydrodynamic downstream transmission part and mechanical Zweigangstufen- reversing gear part via coupling rods to the fixed mounted in the frame wheelsets. The jackshaft is located in the middle on the 240 B and between the second and third gear sets on the 240 C.

The service weight for various constructions is between 28 and 36 t. In order to achieve the higher weight, the buffer beam was supplemented with weights, which means that the length also varies from 7700 to 8100 mm.

The maximum speed is 56 km / h in the route and 28 km / h in the shunting gear. Depending on the version, the tank capacity is between 300 and 1000 l.

Initially, the 240 B and 240 C were delivered with the same driver's cabs as the larger types; from 1958 a modernized design was built.

A total of 14 type 240 C and 55 type 240 B locomotives were built. The last 240 B built (serial number 220089 from 1967) was also the penultimate rod locomotive from Kiel (before the last 450 C ), after the first locomotives of the new type range had been delivered in the years before.

Many of the two-axle locomotives were sold to companies in the coal and steel industry, while Dortmund's Bergbau-AG bought 19 of the 55 locomotives. Other areas of application were port railways and chemical companies such as the Ruhr refinery in Hünxe with five locomotives.

The field of application of the three-axle locomotives is similar, although these were also used on smaller private railways. Three machines were also used for passenger transport on the Bad Orber Kleinbahn .

Today there are still 25 type 240 B and eight type 240 C locomotives, the whereabouts of another six or two are unknown. Many of these locomotives have been preserved in museums or as memorials. Three locomotives of both types (including the former D 12 of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn , which has been operational again since November 2013 after being refurbished) are owned by the Grafschafter Modellisenbahnclub and can be viewed in the Klukkerthafen Nordhorn from 2017, as is the "DL2" locomotive. the former Wittlager Kreisbahn in museum use on its main route. However, a few can still be found in the regular deployment of various industrial railways in 2010.
