Pilgrimage Church of Maria in the Mountains

Maria im Gebirge is the parish and pilgrimage church in Sallapulka in the market town of Weitersfeld in the Horn district in Lower Austria . The church stands on a hill south of the village of Sallapulka in the cadastral community Nonnersdorf on the road to Walkenstein in Sigmundsherberg . The church is also called Birikirche or Biribrindl ( Biribründl ) or Biri for short.

history

The parish of Sallapulka was mentioned for the first time in 1299. Reports about two stones with the inscriptions 1481 and 1491 , which can no longer be found in the meantime, however, suggest that the church was much older.

Due to the lack of written documents, only the assumption remains that, like the places in the vicinity, the Church of Mary in the Mountains also suffered from the incursions of the Bohemian King Johann in 1328 and the Hussites in 1427. During the Thirty Years' War the church was sacked by both Swedish and Imperial troops.

In 1674, on behalf of Anton Sardena, the provost of Herzogenburg Abbey , the pilgrimage church was enlarged in the Renaissance style , the tower renovated and a new high altar erected.

With increasing awareness of the nearby pilgrimage church Basilica Maria Dreieichen near Horn , the number of pilgrims to Sallapulka declined from around 1737. As a result of this decline, the previously existing hermitage was closed. In 1783 Emperor Joseph II abolished the Brotherhood of the Poor Souls founded in 1719 and had the pilgrimage church Maria im Gebirge closed.

In the 19th century the pilgrimage church experienced a boom again. Increased donations made it possible to renovate the tower in 1801 and to renovate the interior of the church in 1830, 1831 and 1835, while the Gothic cemetery chapel was demolished in 1835.

The church's new high altar was consecrated on September 24, 1854. The statues of the Most Holy Trinity, the Madonna, Saint Rosalia and Saint Magdalena have been preserved from the previous altar, with statues of Saint Augustine and Saint Bernard added.

In 1859 the altar consecrated to Saint Peter was re-erected in the side chapel. The church bells were renewed and expanded in 1868 by pouring two new bells and buying two more bells. In 1871 Franz Reusch built the organ.

The bells had to be delivered during the First World War. In 1925 a replacement could be purchased. In 1942 these had to be returned.

The Bründl, which gives the name Biribrindl ( Biribründl ) for the pilgrimage church Maria im Gebirge, is located west of the church on the edge of the forest.

After repair work, the water was returned to the chapel in spring 2003. The Biribründl was re-inaugurated on August 30, 2009 after the renovation work was completed.
