Fronsburg Castle is located north of Weitersfeld in Fronsburg ( Horn district ) in the Waldviertel . The privately owned castle is irregularly shaped with two courtyards and a Gothic chapel . It serves as the headquarters of the Fronsburg forestry operations and is not open to the public.

history

A Hadmar von Freundesperch, a ministerial of the Counts of Hardegg , was first mentioned in Fronsburg in 1230. In 1281 Winther von Vriuntsperch and the brothers Leutwin and Leo von Vreuntsperch were named in a foundation book of the St. Bernhard monastery. Since 1300 there have been frequent changes of ownership. During the Hussite Wars Fronsburg was conquered and destroyed.

In 1448 the brothers Oswald and Stephan von Eyczing received the property from Michael Graf Hardegg, but on the condition that the fiefdom be revived after the family died out.

In 1569, Christoph Lampl bought Fronsburg Castle and Estate from Count Sigismund zu Hardegg and obtained improvements to the old gender coat of arms with the title Lampl Edler Herr zu Fronsburg from Emperor Rudolf II.

In 1739 Franz Rainald / Reinhold Graf von Andlern sold the castle, which had meanwhile been converted into a Renaissance palace, to the Khevenhüller family . Since Hardegg Castle was already in ruins at the time and Riegersburg Castle was used for representation, the Khevenhüller moved their estate management and the regional court here in 1776 . The family crypt was built under the castle chapel. But since this did not suit the future Prince Carl von Khevenhüller-Metsch, he had Hardegg Castle rebuilt and another family crypt built under the castle chapel, in which he is also buried. In the 20th century, Fronsburg Castle was inherited by the Barons von dem Bongart, who came from Westphalia .
