Jeckyll & Hyde is a jumpstyle project by the Dutch DJ and producer Maarten Vorwerk (aka Vorweerk). It was founded as a duo with the also Dutch producer Ruud van IJperen (aka DJ Ruthless ). They are supported by the DJ and MC Patrick Kars alias DJ Red, together with two jump style dancers. Together they are the figure of Jeckyll & Hyde , while Vorwerk and initially Ruthless kept in the background. They produced their tracks together and released them on their own record label Square Beats . At the height of her career, her music style could be classified in the jump style category.
biography
As a duo they were already known in the clubs under the names Ruthless & Vorweerk , Jack & The Ripper , Twisted Maniacs and Spanish Flies . Vorwerk already had a club hit solo with Vietnam , which was later renamed Cambodia . Cambodia is a cover of the original song Cambodia , which was written by Kim Wilde in 1981. This was their first commercial success as Jeckyll & Hyde .
The name goes back to the novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from 1886 by the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson . In 2005 the singles 'Kick this one' and Precious Dreamer were released under these names . The tracks were successful, but they did not reach large audiences yet. Jeckyll & Hyde achieved this in late 2006 with the single Frozen Flame . After a successful vinyl release in June 2006, this track was released on CD by Digidance in August .
Unlike her previous singles, Frozen Flame was regularly played on the radio. The accompanying stop-motion video clip, directed by Pieter Santens, was also often played on music television. The video shows Lego figures dancing in a jump style dance in a discotheque. Posters by Ruthless & Vorwerk and their label Square Beats hang on the walls of this LEGO disco.
After Frozen Flame had been at the beginning of the Dutch Tipparade for six weeks , the song unexpectedly came to number 35 in the Dutch charts. It stayed in these regions for a long time, but in the eighth week Frozen Flame unexpectedly rose to number 19 and then to number 11. In December 2006, they released the Christmas track Merry X-Mas (Jeckyll & The Grinch) under the name Rudolph & The Grinch Hyde Remix) .
After their commercial success, Jeckyll & Hyde are regularly on tour through the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany .
At the end of March 2007 there was again success for Jeckyll & Hyde: The single Freefall reached a position in the Dutch charts. In the first week the single went straight to number 11 and in the second week to number 1. This made Freefall the first instrumental number one hit in the Netherlands since 1995, when Vangelis' Conquest of Paradise was number 1 . In June 2007 Jeckyll & Hyde started a collaboration with Milk Inc. from Belgium. Together they recorded the track 'Sunrise' and released it across Europe. There were two versions of this track. In Belgium it was the original radio edit and in the Netherlands the Jeckyll & Hyde Radio Mix . This single reached number 11 in the Netherlands.
Jeckyll & Hyde received two TMF Awards nominations in 2007 - the TMF Party Award and the TMF Radio Hit Award , which they also won. After DJ Ruthless left the project, Vorwerk more or less continued it alone. The bookings decreased and new singles did not follow either. However, there was no official dissolution.
