Machanga is a district of the Sofala province in Mozambique with the capital Machanga . Its territory is bordered by the Buzi district to the north, the Chibabava district and the Manica province to the west, the Inhambane province to the south and the Indian Ocean to the east .

The Machanga District is 5,715 square kilometers and in 2013 had a population of 58,873 people.

Machanga lies on the Sava River , which forms the entire southern border of the district. Its water is used to irrigate the surrounding fields. According to the classification of Köppen and Geiger , Machanga is located in the tropical savannah climate (Aw) with an average annual rainfall between 870 and 880 millimeters.

The Machanga district has a population density of ten people per square kilometer.

The population is young, but in contrast to most districts of Mozambique, the number of births has remained constant over the past fifteen years.

It is also noticeable that there are significantly more boys than girls between the ages of 0-14. Over fifty percent of the male population of this age is less than 43 percent of the female population (as of 2013).

While 21 percent of the population in the entire Sofala district are Muslims, their share in the Machanga district is only one percent (as of 2007).

Facilities and services

There are 58 primary schools ( Primárias) in the district , of which 39 are public schools and 19 private schools. Of the four secondary schools (Secundárias) , two are public and two are private (as of 2013).

There is no hospital in Machanga, but there are ten health centers (as of 2012).

The Machanga District was founded on July 25, 1986 and is divided into three administrative posts ( postos administrativos );

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2007, less than one percent of the population had electricity, 0.4 percent owned a car.

Agriculture

The 8,000 farms in Machanga have an average size of one hectare of land. In terms of area, maize was cultivated the most (2,800 hectares), while vegetables (3,000 tons) and maize (1,100 tons) had the highest yields. Manioc, beans, peanuts, millet, sweet potatoes and rice were also grown (status 2003).

Natural resources

Limestone and gypsum are mined in the Machanga district, and natural gas is extracted.

The national road EN1 crosses Machanga from south to north. It crosses the Sava River in the south and continues through sparsely populated areas to Buzi. Otherwise there are only poorly developed back roads in the district (ER428 and ER429).
