Life

family

He came from the old, originally Westphalian, noble family Rabe von Pappenheim . His father, Wilhelm Maximilian Rabe von Pappenheim, was chamberlain and chief steward of Prince Carl Friedrich von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach . In Weimar he met Diana Freiin Waldner von Freundstein , who was 20 years his junior , and fell in love with her. Both married on September 6, 1806 in Weimar. In 1808 the couple had to return to the newly created Kingdom of Westphalia , otherwise they would have lost their possessions and goods. Both went to the court of King Jérôme Bonaparte , Napoleon's youngest brother , in Kassel. Wilhelm became chamberlain to the Westphalian king and Diana became chamberlain to Queen Katharina .

Alfred Otto was the couple's second son. His older brother Gottfried August Maximilian (born June 6, 1807 in Weimar, † February 23, 1874 in Weimar) became a royal Hanoverian lieutenant colonel . He last served on foot in the Guard Regiment. In September 1811 Diana gave birth to a daughter, who later became the writer Jenny von Gustedt . She was the illegitimate daughter of King Jérôme, who also held her in his arms when she was baptized . Since Diana's marriage to Wilhelm Rabe von Pappenheim still existed, the latter recognized the child as his legitimate daughter. In October 1813 Diana gave birth to another daughter, who was named Marie Pauline von Schönfeld after her birthplace. She died in 1873 as superior of the Notre Dame des Oiseaux convent.

In 1815, after the death of Wilhelm Maximilian Rabe von Pappenheim, Diana Rabe von Pappenheim married the State Minister of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach Ernst Christian August von Gersdorff for the second time . The marriage produced a daughter. Gersdorff also brought Diana's daughter Jenny and her two sons Gottfried August Maximilian and Alfred Otto to live with him.

Professional background

Rabe von Pappenheim became a lieutenant in the Hessian Guard du Corps . There was a duel with Lieutenant Eduard von Haynau , who later became Minister of War for the Electorate of Hesse. Because of the duel, he entered Russian military service in 1827 and experienced the Russo-Turkish and Russian-Polish wars as the prime lieutenant of the hussars .

In 1835 he said goodbye to military service and retired to his ancestral estate. His older brother Gottfried August Maximilian received the family property in Liebenau . On May 18, 1847, Rabe von Pappenheim became a member of the Electoral Hesse state assembly, the 10th state parliament, as a representative for the knighthood of the Diemel stream.
