The owner-managed Machold Rare Violins , based in Bremen, was the world market leader in the trade in old string instruments.

Companies

The company was founded in Markneukirchen in 1861 as a violin manufacturer. The owner was Dietmar Harry Joachim Machold , who was born in 1949 and once lived at Eichbüchl Castle near Katzelsdorf (the castle was sold in the course of bankruptcy proceedings). Machold had branches in Vienna, Zurich (Geigenbau Machold GmbH and Cadenza AG), Alpnach (Bomalu AG), Bremen, Berlin, New York City , Aspen, Chicago, Seoul and Tokyo and traded in violins by Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù, among others .

In 2001 Machold Rare Violins sold a Guarneri del Gesù violin for $ 1.6 million to a group of sixteen investors. In spring 2007 Machold raised over 10 million euros for the sale of four Stradivaris.

Personal bankruptcy

On October 22, 2010 Dietmar Machold initiated restructuring proceedings with self-administration of his private assets. The court revoked Machold's self-administration in the proceedings on December 1, 2010. On December 29, 2010, the court appointed a creditors' committee and the procedure was changed to bankruptcy. The closure of the company was ordered on February 4, 2011.

On October 29, 2010, Machold initiated restructuring proceedings with self-administration of his company assets. For this purpose, the court withdrew his self-administration on November 23, 2010. On December 21, 2010 the closure of the company was ordered and the procedure changed to bankruptcy. According to KSV, the over-indebtedness was € 80 million.

Arrest and trial

On March 16, 2011, Machold was arrested in Zermatt (Switzerland). He was accused of embezzlement and serious commercial fraud, among other things. In December 2011 he was extradited to Austria and taken into custody.

The trial of the defendant Machold began on September 19, 2012 at the Vienna Regional Criminal Court. In addition to him, his ex-wife, her mother and a musician and former business partner Machold were also charged with aiding and abetting the fraudulent Krida . On November 9, 2012, the 63-year-old Machold was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the jury's senate for embezzlement and fraudulent crime, his ex-wife and their mother were sentenced to one year.
