Maciej Lewenstein

Maciej Lewenstein (born September 21, 1955 in Warsaw ) is a Polish theoretical physicist who deals with quantum optics .

Lewenstein earned his diploma in theoretical physics at the University of Warsaw in 1978 , then worked at the newly founded Center for Theoretical Physics (CTP) of the Polish Academy of Sciences , where he began his dissertation under Kazimierz Rzążewski, which he did at the University of Essen with Fritz Haake in 1983 completed. As a post-doctoral student, he stayed with Haake in Essen and then returned to the CTP. In 1986 he completed his habilitation in Warsaw and then spent three years with Roy Glauber at Harvard University . In 1992 he was at the CEA in Saclay with Anne L'Huillier at the Service des Photons Atomes et Molécules (SPAM), in 1993 he was a visiting scientist at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics at Boulder (JILA) with Peter Zoller and Eric Cornell and in 1994 he was at the institute of Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics (ITAMP) at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics . From 1995 he was again at the SPAM in Saclay for three years. From 1998 to 2005 he was a professor at the Leibniz University in Hanover . Since 2005 he has been Professor at the Catalan Institute for Research and Higher Studies (ICREA) at the Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO) in Castelldefels near Barcelona. He heads the quantum optics group there.

He deals with Bose-Einstein condensates , quantum information theory and the fundamentals of quantum mechanics , quantum optics (e.g. cavity quantum electrodynamics , attosecond laser pulse physics , interaction of high-intensity laser beams with matter) and statistical physics of disordered systems (with application to neural networks ) . With L´Huillier in 1996 he used higher harmonics (HHG) to generate attosecond pulses.

He theoretically investigates the use of atoms in optical lattices to simulate quantum many-body systems , including non-Abelian gauge theories with applications in elementary particle and solid-state physics.

With Jens Eisert and Martin Wilkens he was a pioneer of quantum game theory . With Ignacio Cirac he investigated entanglement percolation in quantum networks.

In 2004 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) . In 2007 he received the Humboldt Research Award and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2008 and 2013 . In 2010 he received the Hamburg Prize for Theoretical Physics from the Joachim Herz Foundation. In 2011 he received the highest Polish research prize (Prize of the Foundation of Polish Science), the Gutenberg Research Prize of the University of Mainz and the EPS Prize for Quantum Optics and Electronics. In 2014 and 2015 he was listed on the Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers. In 2012 he became a member of the Academia Europaea . In 2016 he received the Willis E. Lamb Prize .

He collects jazz records and in 2015 published a discography of Polish jazz recordings.
