Macintosh Quadra is a series of computers manufactured by Apple .

The models mentioned have in common that they are equipped with a Motorola 68040 processor and were usually at the top of the Macintosh product range (as opposed to LC and Performa ). In this high-end role of Quadra 1991/93 released the Macintosh II series (still with 68020 / 30 from CPU). An exception is the entry-level model Quadra 605 , which is technically identical to the LC 475 and Performa 475 models, in which a 68LC040 CPU was installed.

The Quadra was one of the fastest personal computers of its time . Because of its high price (Quadra 700, USD 6,000), most of it was used commercially in the DTP area.

In addition to the main processor with 40 MHz, the Quadra 840AV also had an AT&T 3210 DSP processor with 66.7 MHz to accelerate multimedia content.

With the Quadra 610 PC, Apple tried for the first time to address Windows users and get them to switch. In addition to its 68040 processor, the Quadra 610 PC has an optional Intel-486SX -25 processor on an extra card with max. 32 MB RAM for DOS / Windows and was sold between October 21, 1993 and May 28, 1994.

With Apple's change from the Motorola to the PowerPC architecture, the Power Macintosh series replaced the Quadra series in 1994/95 .
