Macks Ølbryggeri (in full: AS L. Macks ølbryggeri og mineralvannsfabrikk ) is a brewery in Tromsø ( Norway ). It was founded in 1877 by Ludwig Markus Mack (1842 in Tromsø - 1915 there).

history

Ludwig Mack was a son of Georg Andreas Ludwig Mack (* February 22, 1805 in Braunschweig ; † May 18, 1878 in Tromsø) a baker from Braunschweig who came to Tromsø on a wandering trip and stayed there and married a Norwegian. Ludwig Mack noticed that there was no brewery as most of them made their beer at home. So he decided to start a brewery. Since alcoholism was a big problem at the time ( there was no alcohol tax yet), he wanted people to prefer his low-proof beer to wine or schnapps .

  • 1963 - Plant expansion and modernization

  • 2012 - The brewery moves to Nordkjosbotn, 55 km away

Northernmost brewery in the world

Mack Øl describes itself as the "northernmost brewery in the world" ( verdens nordligste bryggeri ). As such, it was temporarily replaced on December 10, 2000 by the small Nordkapp Mikrobryggeri brewery from Honningsvåg . She called her first beer Sårry Makk (sounds like: Sorry Mack in Norwegian ). After the closure of Nordkapp Mikrobryggeri, Macks Ølbryggeri temporarily became the northernmost brewery in the world again. After the move from Mack's production facility to Nordkjosbotn in 2012, however, this title was lost to the brewery in the Hotel Icefjiord in Ilulissat in Greenland, which was about 50 m further north. In the meantime, the Hotel Icefjiord has also ceased operations and the facilities have been taken over by Brewery Immiaq (also in Ilulissat), which held the title of northernmost brewery in the world from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, a change in the law led to the opening of Svalbard Bryggeri in Longyearbyen at 78 ° north latitude, which has since held the title.

market

Due to the high alcohol tax, Mack Øl produces almost exclusively for the domestic market. It is only exported to the other Scandinavian countries.

Ølhallen

The Ølhallen, the northernmost beer cellar in the world, is connected to the brewery. It opens in the morning to serve beer, which is unique in Norway. From the beginning it was considered a meeting place for whalers and polar explorers and is now a popular destination for tourists.

Guided tours of the brewery and tastings are also offered for those interested.
