Madde Kalda (until 1925 Magdalena Alavina , 1925-1936 Magdalena Kalda , born August 10, jul. / 23. August  1903 greg. In Põikma, rural community Kohila , † 6. April 1984 in Väike-Maarja ) was an Estonian writer .

life and work

Kalda graduated from school in 1917 and then worked as a secretarial assistant in the municipal administration, after which she lived as a housewife in Väike-Maarja until her death, only interrupted by a three-year stay in Tamse on the island of Muhu .

Her manuscript Vigalast Siberimaale ("From Vigala to Siberia"), submitted to the 1978 novel competition , received a special prize and was published three years later as a book under the title Seven Stars in the Sky . The novel is based on the life story of her mother and offers a detailed picture of village life in western Estonia in the last quarter of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It was particularly praised by the critics because of its "authenticity" and "emotional memory", which previous historical research has not been able to achieve. In addition, it replaced the "memoir" genre in the Soviet era, which did not really exist due to the censorship and the prescribed, Marxist-determined view of history. As one critic remarked: "This kind of literary family history approximates the memoir literature in some ways and as such is certainly helpful for an understanding of history in general."
