Madeleine Peace-Chins
Madeleine Frieden-Kinnen (born October 4, 1915 in Esch an der Alzette , † February 8, 1999 in Luxembourg ) was a Luxembourg politician and the first female minister of Luxembourg.
Life
She studied in Dijon, Paris, Munich and Leuven and received her doctorate in literature. In 1946 she married the director of the National Library, Pierre Frieden , who was Luxembourg Prime Minister from 1958 to 1959.
In 1953, Frieden-Kinnen was the founder of the Christian social women's organization and from 1960 to 1966 she was the president of the Catholic Action of Women in Luxembourg. During the cabinet reshuffle of January 3, 1967, she became the first female member of a Luxembourg government to become State Secretary for Youth, Family and Education. In 1969 she became Minister for Family, Youth and Social Solidarity as well as Minister of Culture and Education in the Werner-Schaus II government . After her resignation in 1972 because of the Burgfried Affair, she withdrew from politics and devoted herself to development aid in Africa.
After her death, a declaration she had written was read out in the Luxembourg Parliament in which she rejected the allegations made against her in 1972.
