Madison is a small town in the east of the US state South Dakota and is the county seat of Lake County . The population is 6,540 (as of 2000).

The place, which became the county seat of Lake County in 1873 and thus before its elevation, is located between two larger lakes: Lake Herman in the west and Lake Madison in the east. The latter is used extensively for water sports in summer. The area is sparsely populated and dominated by agriculture. Mainly maize and grain are grown.

Madison is home to the campus of Dakota State University, which is nationally known for its computer science courses. To the west of Madison is the museum village "Prairie Village", which shows life in the prairie around 1900.
