Stained glass window Madonna and Child

The stained glass window Madonna and Child is in the Museum of the Renaissance ( Musée national de la Renaissance ) in the Castle of Écouen (France). It dates from 1544 and the year is written twice on the window.

The origin of the well-preserved work is not known. The style of the stained glass window is in the tradition of the Mannerist school of Fontainebleau , it is believed that an engraving by Jean Mignon served as a model .

In the middle the Mother of God is shown, who is holding Jesus sitting on his right thigh. Both have a yellow nimbus , the only color accents in the picture, which is otherwise reminiscent of grisaille painting. They sit elevated, as if on a throne , and are framed by renaissance architecture with drapery . Left and right are two angels , almost symmetrically , holding flowers in their hands. Mary looks attentively at Jesus, who, looking at the ground, performs the gesture of blessing with his right hand . Maria holds a bowl with her left hand; her dress has many folds and ends on the floor.

The halos and the hair of the angels are drawn with silver solder and the rest of the disc with black solder on white glass. It is no longer possible to determine which lead was added during later restorations. The face of Jesus and the angel on the left are slightly distorted, while the parts of the face of Mary and the angel on the right can be seen expressively.
