The Mae Nam Tapi (Thai: แม่น้ำ ตาปี ), or just Tapi , is a river in southern Thailand . Its source is located on Khao Luang Mountain in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province , and its mouth in the Gulf of Thailand is near the city of Surat Thani . The river has a total length of 165 km.
With a catchment area of 5460 km² (excluding the main tributary Phum Duang ) and an average water volume of 135.4 m³ / s or 4.3 km³ per year, the Tapi is the largest river in southern Thailand. The river was named after the Tapti River in India in August 1915 , after the city of Surat Thani got its name from the city of Surat - King Vajiravudh , who had visited the area, reminded the location of the city of Indian conditions.
