Magdalena Parys (born June 29, 1971 in Danzig ) is a German-Polish writer. She also publishes her publications under the name Magda Parys Liskowski.

Life

Magdalena Parys was born in Gdansk and grew up in Szczecin . At the age of 13, she and her family moved to West Berlin . After graduating from the Gustav-Heinemann-Schule , she studied educational sciences and polonistics at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Essay writing and literary activity

Magdalena Parys made her debut in 2001 in the cultural magazine “Pogranicza”, where she published her first short stories and poems. Between 2003 and 2004, she and Isabella Potrykus organized the international literary competition “I am the one who has arrived”, in which authors from the future UE candidate countries Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia as well as Germany took part. The submitted texts appeared in an anthology of the same name. From 2006–2007 she was editor-in-chief of the German-Polish literary magazine "Squaws", which she founded. She worked as a columnist for the magazines "Zwierciadło" and "Wysokie obcasy". Parys occasionally writes for the Polish daily newspaper “ Gazeta Wyborcza ”, the book magazine “Magazyn Ksiazki”, the German-Polish magazine “ Dialog ”, the “ Stuttgarter Zeitung ” and the French weekly magazine “Marianne”. She is the author of numerous interviews with politicians and writers, including Erika Steinbach and Tanja Dückers .

Literary work

Parys lives in Berlin and writes about German post-war history in Polish. She writes from the experience of her Polish childhood and her German presence. Her debut novel Tunel (2011), ( Der Tunnel ), tells about Berlin, Gdansk and the fate of three European generations. It was nominated for several prizes in Poland and celebrated by culture.pl as one of “the most important debut novels of the year”. In Austria, the novel was awarded the Polish “Golden Owl” prize, in France it was nominated for the bookseller and librarian prize “Le prix Libr'a nous” 2018 and the literary prize “Prix littéraire de la ville de Quimper”. For her second novel, the political-historical thriller Magik ( The Magician ), published in 2014 (1st part of the Berlin trilogy ), she was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature . The family novel Biała Rika (2016) was named the best novel of the year by several Polish bloggers. Her books have been translated into several languages ​​(French, German, Italian, Hungarian, Serbian, Croatian, Albanian, Bulgarian, etc.). The French editions of Der Tunnel ( 188 metres sous Berlin , Agullo Éditions 2017) and Der Magier ( Le Magicien , Agullo Éditions 2019) were particularly successful . “ Le Monde ” equates Le Magicien with Thomas Mann's literature , “ Liberation ” compares it with the Oscar-winning film The Lives of Others , “ L'Obs ” describes Parys as “one of the greatest writers of the post-communist era”.
