Giovanni Gualberto Magli (* before 1607 in Florence ; † 1625 there ) was an Italian opera singer ( castrato , mezzo-soprano ) whose active time as a singer was in the first quarter of the 17th century.

Life

He was born in Florence and studied singing with Giulio Caccini before becoming a musician in the Medici House on August 23, 1604 . In 1607 he was at the court of Francesco IV Gonzaga in Mantua and took part with Girolamo Bacchini at the premiere of the opera L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi , in the role of La Musica and Proserpina and possibly another role. The musicologist and historian Hans Redlich erroneously attributes the role of Orfeo to Magli. In 1608 he sang at the wedding celebrations of Cosimo II de 'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Maria Magdalena of Austria . In October 1611, Antonio de 'Medici (1576–1621) gave him two years of paid leave to conduct research in Naples . He left the Medici in 1615 for a musical engagement at the court of Johann Sigismund , Elector of Brandenburg. He stayed there until September 1622. He was buried in Florence on January 8, 1625.
