(21798) Mitchweegman is a main inner belt asteroid discovered on September 30, 1999 at the Lincoln Laboratory Experimental Test System ( IAU code 704) in Socorro , New Mexico as part of the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project. Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already occurred on October 23, 1979 (1979 UQ 1 ) at the Chilean observatory Cerro El Roble and in 1998 (1998 HA 105 ) at the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research.
(21798) Mitchweegman was named on August 22, 2005 after Mitch Weegman (* 1988), a Winona Senior High School student in Winona , Minnesota , for winning the 2005 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair , a pre-university research competition in in the Environmental Sciences Team Project category with his twin brother Matt received second prize. His project was titled A Nutritional Comparison of Historic Lesser Scaup Foods of the Zebra Mussel (A nutritional comparison between the traditional food of the violet duck and the mongoose ). The asteroids (21633) Hsingpenyuan and (21634) Huangweikang were named after the overall winners in the 2005 team category .
