Magnesium silicates are chemical compounds from the group of silicates , more precisely the magnesium salts of silicic acids . The formula is commonly written as MgO xSiO 2 , where x is the average molar ratio of silica to magnesia . If it is a hydrate , it is sometimes written MgO · xSiO 2 · H 2 O.

Occurrence

Of course, magnesium silicates occur in various hydrated forms as talc and sepiolite , as well as a component of minerals of the serpentine group (e.g. antigorite and chrysotile ) and oliving group (e.g. forsterite ).

use

Magnesium silicates are used as standard absorbents in analytical and preparative chromatography . This is offered under the trade name Florisil ® , which, however, has a changing composition of different magnesium silicates and in some cases still contains up to 1% sodium sulfate . Magnesium silicates are also used as a food additive under the designation E 553a as a filler and release agent . They prevent powdery foods from clumping together and are excreted unchanged by the body (as they cannot be used) and are therefore considered harmless.

Apart from the usual hazards of substances in dust form, magnesium silicates are harmless to health if no asbestos can be detected in them . Talc is harmless if it is not in fiber form.
