Magnus is a Polish thrash and death metal band from Wroclaw , which was founded in 1987, disbanded in 1997 and has been active again since 2010.

history

The band was formed in 1987. Shortly after the first demo was released under the name Power Metal , the singer Robert Szymański aka Rob Bandit joined the cast. In addition to him, the group consisted of guitarists Maciej “Python” Puto and Bernard “Bastard” Wyjadłowski, bassist Edward “Edi” Juszczak and drummer J. “Raku” Rakowicz. In February 1988 a couple of concerts were held in France . Back in Poland a few concerts were played before the drummer Rakowicz was replaced by Jarosław "Jaras" Duchniak. Thereupon a second demo called Trash - Speed - Blood was recorded, which was released that same year. As a manager, took Krzysztof Brankowski a moderator in the Polish Radio, the band in. In 1989 the band worked on new songs while more concerts were given. The debut album Scarlet Slaughterer was recorded in the Izabelin Studio between October and December . However, the album did not appear until 1991 MIL Records as audiocassette and 1992 on Digiton as a CD . It was later, in 2007, at Reaper Metal Records to record and Blood Harvest Records re-released on CD. In March 1990 the group performed three times in Moscow . At that time Wyjadłowski was replaced by guitarist Guzz and Juszczak by bassist Addagio. In April Magnus was again in Moscow, this time at the Zelazny Marsz Festival in Gorky Park . After appearing in Russia , others followed in Poland. Meanwhile the band worked on other songs; the first ones completed were That Is The Reason I'd Like You To Die… and Gods of Crime . The band continued the writing process and rehearsing until April 1991. In the same year the band played for the third time in what was then the Soviet Union by performing twice in the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium . From April 30th to May 2nd the demo The Gods of Crime was recorded and released in the same year. In 1991 bassist Addagio was also replaced by Grzegorz "Greg" Zarzycki. 1992 started the year with concerts with Napalm Death , Samael , Deicide , Atrocity and Gorefest . In May and June, again in the Izabelin Studio, eleven new songs were recorded. In July the next album I Was Watching My Death was released on the Swiss label Blackend Records . Almost at the same time, the Polish label Carnage Records released eight songs from this session under the name The Gods of the Crime . In the same year the band also took part in the Shark Attack Festival and the Jarocin Festival and performed with Dragon , Pandemonium and Betrayer . From the beginning of 1993 to September of that year further concerts were played while the next album was being worked on, which had the working title Perfect Crime . The album was recorded at the Izabelin Studio in October. The release took place in the same year under the title Alcholic Suicide , with the album initially only appeared in Poland. Outside Poland, it was available through Holycast Records . In 1994, Alcoholic Suicide and I Was Watching My Death were re-released on Metal Mind Productions . From 1994 to 1996 Magnus went on tour to promote the album and was represented at Metalmania , among others . The band also thought about releasing an album that would only contain covers of various punk classics. However, she rejected this idea. Instead, it was dissolved in 1997.

It wasn't until 2010 that the band was revived. She signed a recording deal for the release of two albums, as well as re-releases of old albums with Witching Hour Productions . The first album was released in September of that year with the name Acceptance of Death and includes 13 songs.

style

Timm from metal.de wrote in his review of Acceptance of Death that the band deals with the subject of vanitas . However, the sound and the structure of the songs turned out to be very primitive. Instead, "an extremely cluttered Death / Thrash archetype" can be heard, reminiscent of Venom . However, Magnus misses the “ popesque , catchy refrains, hooklines and overall understandable song structures”. While the musicians work their way through the "crude arrangements on the instruments , Rob Bandit screams, grunts and screeches continuously over and past the songs without structure". Sidney König from musikreviews.de described the music in his review of the same album as old-school thrash and death metal. The songs are fast and aggressive and no longer than four minutes. They would contain dissonant riffs and deep vocals. The band also make use of solos and breaks .
