Life

Magnus Maßmann was the son of the lawyer Christian Maßmann and his wife Charlotte, b. Köhn. Maßmann's mother died very early, and his father went to America without looking after his children. Despite this difficult situation at the Great City School, Magnus Maßmann passed his Abitur in March 1855. He then studied law in Rostock and Berlin until 1859 . Here he received his doctorate in 1864. During his studies in Rostock, Maßmann was a member of the Corps Obotritia Rostock. Magnus Maßmann married Meta Kühl, the daughter of the Ratsapotheker in Rostock, in October 1863. In 1864 he applied for a senatorial office in Rostock, his election took place on April 18, 1864 and his inauguration on April 22. In the same year he received his doctorate and began his work as a judge at the criminal court and assessor in the police office. Until 1868 he was also president of the lower court. In the years 1868 and 1869 Maßmann was Rostock's deputy at the Supreme Court and Court of Honor and from 1868 to 1872 an assessor at the Police Administration Department.

In 1872 Maßmann became director of the police office. In this position he worked until 1880. At the same time, from 1878 he took on the function of the Reich Commissioner for the Grand Ducal Maritime Office in Rostock and from 1879 he was a member of the state parliament in Mecklenburg. On January 8, 1880 he became the council counsel appointed.

On May 10, 1889, Maßmann was elected mayor of Rostock. He held this post until October 1, 1914, which he gave up for health reasons. He worked on a voluntary basis for the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology for more than 25 years . Maßmann made a contribution to the establishment of a pulmonary hospital against the widespread pulmonary tuberculosis, so in 1909 he called for donations to be collected.

Honors

Maßmann had achieved great merit in the exercise of his offices for the city of Rostock, for example in the economic development during the beginning of industrialization . In December 1909, on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a civil servant, he received great public recognition. On April 22, 1914, on the day of his 50th anniversary as a council member, Magnus Maßmann became an honorary citizen of Rostock and the Medical Faculty of the University of Rostock awarded him an honorary doctorate. As a reminder, in 1914, while Maßmann was still alive, Lindenallee was renamed Bürgermeister-Maßmann-Straße (from 1921 onwards, simplified to Maßmannstraße ).
