The oldest surviving mention of the church comes from 1141. However, excavation findings indicate that it was built in the 8th century. From this Carolingian building, three windows, which have now been converted into niches, and parts of the north nave wall have been preserved. The patronage of St. Magnus von Füssen probably goes back to this early period.

The church was expanded several times between the 10th and 15th centuries. During the Middle Ages , the Magnuskirche served as the parish church of the neighboring Andreasstift .

The Magnus Church in Worms is the oldest Lutheran church in Southwest Germany : Here was already in 1520, ie before the Diet of Worms in 1521 , in the sense of Luther preached.

After the city was destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689, the church was renovated in 1756 in baroque forms. On February 21, 1945 the church was destroyed again by an Allied air raid. During the restoration after the Second World War in 1953, the Romanesque forms were used.
