location

The house is located south of the Speyerer Tor diagonally across from the former administration building of the sugar factory, which is also listed . To the north is another sophisticated villa with a stair tower at Frankenstrasse 2. Mahlastrasse 15 and 17 are listed residential buildings from the 1890s. Mahlastraße 11 belongs to the Jahnplatz monument zone .

history

Along the road to Speyer , villas for manufacturers and directors as well as houses for civil servants (employees) of the Frankenthal sugar factory were built in the 1890s . The villas at Frankenstrasse 2 and Mahlastrasse 21 were planned by the architect Albert Friedrich Speer for directors of the sugar factory. Directly opposite was the Swiss house of the sugar factory owner Philipp Karcher, and to the south, the villa of the cork manufacturer Bender in the confectioner's style . Both were victims of the 1943 bomb attack. In addition to residential purposes, the villa has recently served as a seminar house and studio for an artist.

description

The building is a representative two and a half storey villa in country style. The plastered building shows half-timbering on the two attic floors . The floor plan is irregular, it has a winter garden and a porch. In the stair tower there used to be a large water tank that ensured a constant water supply. Allegedly an underground corridor is said to have led from the cellar to the administration building of the sugar factory. But that is unlikely, as this would have required a complex tunneling under the Isenach .
