Mahmut Özdemir (born June 23, 1987 in Duisburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). At the age of 26, he was elected to parliament as the youngest member of the Bundestag at the time in the 2013 Bundestag election.

Education, job and life

Mahmut Özdemir was born in Duisburg- Homberg as the first child of the married couple Zeki and Aynur Özdemir. His parents are from Turkey . From 1993 to 1997 he attended the Ottostraße community elementary school. In 1997 Özdemir moved to the Franz-Haniel-Gymnasium in Duisburg-Homberg, which he left with the Abitur in 2006 . From 2006 to 2010 he studied law with a focus on public law at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. He completed his law studies in 2011 with the first state examination. From June 2011 to May 2013 Mahmut Özdemir worked in the legal preparatory service as a trainee lawyer in the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court. Due to his mandate in the Bundestag, Özdemir took a leave of absence until September 30, 2017.

As part of his studies, Özdemir completed a legal internship from February to April 2007 and an administrative internship in the SPD parliamentary group in the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament from August to September 2007. Since September 2007 he has been an employee of the SPD parliamentary group in North Rhine-Westphalia with a focus on assistance to the parliamentary committees of inquiry I and II, technical assistance in the area of ​​penal execution and expert work in the field of state policy for constitutional and parliamentary law. From April 2008 to November 2008 he worked as a student assistant at the Institute for Party Law and Party Research (PRuF) in Düsseldorf.

At the age of 14, Özdemir became a member of the SPD in 2001. He was involved in local politics in Duisburg for twelve years. From 2009 to 2013 he was an elected district representative in the district representation Homberg / Ruhrort / Baerl. He is chairman of the SPD Homberg.

In the 2013 federal election he ran for the constituency of Duisburg II . He won the direct mandate with 43.2% of the first votes and was the youngest member of the 18th German Bundestag on election day - but was replaced by Ronja Kemmer (then Ronja Schmitt) in December 2014. In the 2017 Bundestag elections , he was able to defend his direct mandate with 34.7% of the votes and moved into the Bundestag again.
