Mahmut Bakalli
Mahmut Bakalli ( Serbo-Croatian Махмут Бакали / Mahmut Bakali , born January 19, 1936 in Đakovica , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † April 14, 2006 in Pristina , Serbia and Montenegro ) was a Yugoslav and Kosovar politician.
biography
Bakalli was born in Gjakova in southwest Kosovo. He attended middle school in Prizren , studied political science at the University of Belgrade and initially worked at the University of Pristina .
Bakalli was initially a member of the youth organization of the Association of Communists of Kosovo, and in 1961 became its chairman. From 1967 he was chairman of the Pristina municipal committee of the federal government and subsequently also a member of the Central Committee of the Serbian Division and the Presidium of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia (BdKJ) .
Bakalli was President of the BdKJ in Kosovo from June 28, 1971. On May 6, 1981, he resigned from his position in the wake of Albanian student protests, which the party leadership responded to with the use of the police and the Yugoslav army.
In the run-up to the Kosovo war , Bakalli was in 1998 a. a. together with Ibrahim Rugova, a member of a five-person delegation that negotiated with the Serbian leadership under Slobodan Milošević to end the violence in Kosovo, but was unsuccessful. In the Milošević trial before the ICTY in The Hague he was a. a. for this reason, on February 18 and 19, 2002, he was the first prosecution witness.
Mahmut Bakalli was on the list of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo by Ramush Haradinaj, a member of the Kosovar parliament, and most recently as an advisor to Agim Çeku .
He died of throat cancer on April 14, 2006. Bakalli was married and had three daughters.
