Mahndorfer dune

The Mahndorfer dune is an inland dune in the southeast of the hamlet Arbergen in the Bremen district Hemelingen . It is the remnant of an inland dune landscape that used to shape the landscape, which was created by ice-age drifting sand, and one of the last remaining dune remains in Bremen that was not removed or built over .

Today the Mahndorfer dune forms a 2.7  hectare large conservation area , which consists of a relatively narrow strip directly south of the goods bypass Bremen the railway line trough-Eickel-Hamburg exists. In the east of the landscape protection area lies the remainder of the dunes, while flat sandy areas connect to the west. With the exception of the railway embankment, the edges are covered with bushes or wooded areas. To the south, in the transition area to the marsh , the dune is bordered by a birch-oak forest with a high proportion of dead wood .

On the treeless part of Mahndorfer dune grow silver grass and bent grass , prevail in the flat part lean lawn and a sandy heath area with Heather before.

The area has belonged to the BUND since 1985 , which also looks after it and through maintenance measures u. a. counteracts the encroachment of the area. A path leads through the landscape protection area.
