The Bodesruh memorial

The Bodesruh memorial is a lookout tower built to commemorate the division of Germany in the district of Kleinensee in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in East Hesse .

location

The memorial is located about one kilometer southeast of Hönebach and one kilometer southwest of Kleinensee not far from Jagdhaus Bodesruh on the access road to the Monte Kali potash heap, right on the border with Thuringia . From the viewing platform you have a view of the Hessian Kleinensee and the Thuringian neighboring town of Großensee , to Monte Kali and the Gerstung basin to the Thuringian Forest .

history

The memorial was erected in 1963 by the community of Kleinensee, now a district of Heringen , and the state of Hesse, right on the then inner-German border . The building, designed by the Bad Hersfeld architect Karl Schuman, was intended to commemorate the fate of the late returnees and the division of Germany as a result of the Second World War and a reminder for the peaceful reunification of Germany. The first renovation work on the tower took place in 1973/74. In 1990 that part of the memorial plaque was removed that showed the German Eastern Territories .

description

The Bodesruh memorial consists of two 16.8 m high square concrete slabs that stand on the legs of a triangle open to the east and carry a viewing platform at a height of 10.4 m, which is accessible at any time via 52 steps of a metal spiral staircase . Several orientation boards with information on visual targets are attached to the parapet . Two memorial plaques on the side walls remind of the construction of the memorial and the divided Germany.
