Maihar ( Hindi : मैहर , Maihar ) is a place in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . It has around 40,000 inhabitants (2011 census) and is located in the Satna administrative district . The place was the capital of the princely state of Maihar .

This is where the Maihar Gharana , a style of North Indian classical music in the 20th century, was founded. She is closely associated with the musician Allauddin Khan and was educated by his students Annapurna Devi (Alauddin Khan's daughter), Ravi Shankar (Alauddin Khan's son-in-law), Ali Akbar Khan (Alauddin Khan's son), Amit Bhattacharya , Aashish Khan (Alauddin Khan's grandson), Bahadur Khan (Alauddin Khan's nephew), Vasant Rai , Pannalal Ghosh and Nikhil Banerjee .
