Maihueniopsis archiconoidea is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Maihueniopsis archiconoidea forms cushions up to 20 centimeters in diameter and grows with deep-reaching roots . The spherical to conical, non-humped shoot sections are up to 1.7 centimeters long. The about 30 very close together, very small areoles are present up to the base of the shoot sections and are packed at the tip of the shoot sections. Thorns arise from the upper half of the shoot sections . The very conspicuous glochids are tufted and mainly present on the lower areoles of the shoot sections. The single, sometimes missing, white central spine has a brown tip. It is straight, flat, curved away, broad at the base and tapering towards the top. The central spine is up to 1.5 centimeters long. The three to five unequal radial spines are irregularly curved or directed downwards. The shorter of them lie on the surface of the shoot.

Nothing is known about the flowers .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Maihueniopsis archiconoidea is distributed in the Chilean region of Atacama east of the city of Vallenar from at altitudes of 1200 to 2800 meters.

It was first described in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonyms are Opuntia archiconoidea (F.Ritter) DRHunt (1997) and Tephrocactus archiconoideus (F.Ritter) GDRowley (2006).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
