Maihueniopsis subterranea is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet subterranea comes from Latin , means 'underground' and refers to the shoots of the species that grow almost completely underground.

description

Maihueniopsis subterranea grows dwarfish and is mostly sunk into the ground, so that only the shoot tips protrude up to about 1 centimeter. A massive, fleshy taproot is formed. The elongated or almost spherical, turning round shoot sections are simple or form one or two side shoots. The tiny glochids are only present on the lower areoles of the shoot sections. The up to 10 thorns lie in a comb shape on the shoot surface and are up to 2 millimeters long.

The brownish (?) To dark pink to light pink or white flowers have a length of up to 3 centimeters. Your pericarpel is covered with a few scales with a few hairs and bristles. The dried fruits are spherical.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Maihueniopsis subterranea is widespread in the Bolivian Department of Potosí and the Argentine province of Jujuy in the Puna vegetation of the high Andes in flat areas at altitudes of 3000 to 3600 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia subterranea in 1905 by Robert Elias Fries . Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in the genus Maihueniopsis in 1999 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Pseudotephrocactus subterraneus (REFr.) Kreuz. (1935), Tephrocactus subterraneus (REFr.) Backeb. (1936), Cumulopuntia subterranea (REFr.) F. Ritter (1980) and Puna subterranea (REFr.) R. Kiesling (1982).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The future development of the populations is unknown.
