Maihueniopsis tarapacana is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tarapacana means '(lat. Tarapacanus) from the location near Tarapacá (northern Chile)'.

description

Maihueniopsis tarapacana forms cushions. The egg-shaped shoot sections are up to 2 centimeters long and 1 centimeter in diameter. The glochids are yellowish white, the one or two stiff, awl thorns are reddish yellow.

The lemon-yellow flowers are 2 to 2.5 centimeters long. Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds .

Distribution and systematics

Maihueniopsis tarapacana is thought to be widespread in the Chilean region of Tarapacá and probably in the Argentine province of Catamarca .

It was first described as Opuntia tarapacana in 1891 by Rudolph Amandus Philippi . Friedrich Ritter placed the species in the genus Maihueniopsis in 1980 . A synonym is Tephrocactus tarapacanus (Phil.) Backeb. (1936).
