Maihueniopsis wagenknechtii is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet wagenknechtii honors the cactus collector Rudolfo Wagenknecht, who comes from Germany and lives in Chile.

description

Maihueniopsis wagenknechtii forms dense cushions. The elongated to egg-shaped, not humped shoot sections are bluish green and very pointed. They are up to 7 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2 centimeters in diameter. The white felted, somewhat sunken areoles have a diameter of 1.5 to 3 millimeters. The areoles in the lower area of ​​the shoot sections are covered with tufts of honey-colored glochids . The five to seven white thorns emerging from them are pointed dark brown. They are round, horizontally protruding or slightly curved downwards and up to 2 centimeters long.

Nothing is known about the flowers and fruits .

Distribution and systematics

Maihueniopsis wagenknechtii is distributed in the Andes of the Chilean region of Coquimbo at altitudes of 2000 meters.

It was first described in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is Opuntia wagenknechtii (F.Ritter) DRHunt (1997).
