The Main River is a river in the west of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador island Newfoundland in the south of the Great Northern Peninsula .
The river is popular as canoeing water. Big Steady , a secluded valley with pristine forests, and an 8 km long gorge near its mouth lies on its stretch of river. There are no settlements along the Main River. It is considered to be one of the last original rivers in Newfoundland. The river was granted Canadian Heritage River status in 2001 . In 2009, the Main River Waterway Provincial Park was established, which extends over an area of 152 km².
River course
The Main River has its source within the Gros Morne National Park in the Long Range Mountains at an altitude of 675 m . It flows in a southeasterly direction over a distance of 57 km, before he near the settlement of Sop's Arm in White Bay opens. The route 420 traverses the flow immediately above the mouth thereof. At river kilometer 40 the Eagle Mountain Brook meets the Main River on the right. The Sunshine Falls and Twin Falls are approximately at river kilometer 25 . These represent a partial obstacle for migratory fish .
Hydrology
The Main River drains an area of 1017.4 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 32 km above the mouth is 28.9 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges usually occur in May with an average of 104 m³ / s.
Wildlife
The stock of Atlantic salmon is considered "not threatened" in the Main River system. Other fish species found in the Main River are: brook trout , arctic smelt , American eel, and three-spined and nine-spined stickleback .
Mammals in the river include the American mink , the North American otter , the Canadian beaver and the muskrat .
