The Mainz pointed head chirp ( Jassargus obtusivalvis ) is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the chirps (Deltocephalinae).

features

The cicadas are 2.7-3.2 mm long. They have a light brown marbled spot pattern and are similar to other species of the same genus. A reliable differentiation from these can usually only be carried out on the basis of a microscopic examination of the male genitals.

Occurrence

The species is native to the western Palearctic . Its main area of ​​distribution is in southern Central Europe. Their occurrence ranges from southern Russia in the east to the south of France and the north of the Iberian Peninsula . The warmth-loving species prefers sunny, dry locations, especially vineyards, as habitat.

Way of life

The Mainz pointed head chirp can be found on various sweet grasses (Poaceae), on which they feed on an oligophagous diet. As food plants that are upright brome ( Bromus erectus ) and the koeleria Koeleria pyramidata and Koeleria macrantha called. The adults are usually observed between the beginning of May and the end of October. The species usually trains two generations per year. It hibernates as an egg.
